Tension is the currency of engagement. Every memorable scene—whether in a tabletop RPG, a video game, or a novel—runs on tension: building it, sustaining it, releasing it. Yet most design advice treats tension as a vague "feel" rather than something you can deliberately engineer.

The Tension Engine changes that. It gives you seven distinct dials you can adjust independently, allowing precise control over the dramatic intensity of any moment. Think of it as a mixer board for experience design.

How to Use This Framework

Before a session/scene: Decide which dials should be high, medium, or low. Use the Tension Recipes below for common combinations.

During play: If energy is flagging, turn a dial up. If players seem overwhelmed, turn one down. You rarely need to move more than one or two dials at a time.

After: Map your session's tension curve. Did it rise and fall naturally? Were there enough peaks and valleys?
