What Is an Encounter?

An encounter is any scene where characters face an obstacle, make meaningful choices, and experience consequences. It's the basic unit of interactive storytelling—the atomic building block from which sessions, arcs, and campaigns are constructed.

Most GMs default to one encounter type (usually combat) because it has the clearest structure. This resource gives you that same structural clarity for every type of scene you might run.

The goal: Walk into any scene with a clear framework, knowing what beats to hit, what complications to introduce, and how to handle both success and failure.

How to Use This Resource

1

Identify the Type

Determine which of the five encounter types best fits your scene. Some scenes blend types—pick the primary mode.

2

Build the Framework

Use the construction template to establish stakes, obstacles, and resolution conditions before play begins.

3

Run with Flexibility

Use the complication menu and failure states to improvise when players surprise you. The structure supports, not constrains.
