You may have experienced a flow state at some point — that sense of fluidity between your body and mind, where you are totally absorbed by and deeply focused on something. Time feels like it has slowed down. Your senses are heightened. You are at one with the task at hand. In positive psychology, this is the mental state where a person is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of an activity.

For writers, understanding the conditions that create flow is key. It allows you to write scenes of incredible competence, create tension by breaking these conditions, and structure compelling character arcs based on the pursuit of mastery.

The Conditions for Flow

1. Knowing What to Do

This refers to having a clear understanding of the goals and objectives of the task. The character knows exactly what they need to accomplish.

2. Knowing How to Do It

This refers to having the necessary knowledge and skills to complete the task successfully. The character has the competence to match the goal.

3. Knowing How Well You Are Doing

This refers to having a clear sense of progress and understanding of one's own performance. The character receives immediate feedback on their actions.

4. Knowing Where to Go

This refers to having a clear sense of direction and understanding the next steps needed to reach the end goal. The path forward is clear.

5. High Perceived Challenges

The task presents a significant challenge, but one that is seen as achievable. It's difficult, but not impossible.

6. High Perceived Skills

The character feels confident in their ability to meet the challenge. They believe they have what it takes.

7. Freedom from Distractions

The character can fully concentrate on the task without being interrupted or distracted by external or internal factors.

Flow as a Narrative Device

Showing Mastery

When you want to show a character is a true master, describe a scene where all seven conditions are met. Don't just say they're good; show them in a state of flow.

  • Example: A master assassin moves through a guarded fortress. She knows her target (what to do), her skills are honed (how to do it), every silent takedown provides feedback (how well she's doing), she visualizes the path to the throne room (where to go), the mission is dangerous (high challenge), she trusts her training (high skill), and her focus is absolute (no distractions). The scene is tense but effortless for her.

Creating Tension: The Anti-Flow State

The most intense moments in a story often come from breaking one or more of these conditions for your hero at a critical moment. This is the "anti-flow state," defined by anxiety, confusion, and struggle.

  • Break Condition #1 (What to do): The hero discovers their mission was a lie, or they have two conflicting, urgent objectives.
  • Break Condition #5 (High Challenge): The challenge suddenly becomes overwhelming. The enemy reveals a power the hero can't possibly match.
  • Break Condition #7 (No Distractions): In the middle of disarming a bomb, the hero is forced to confront a painful memory or a sudden betrayal. Their focus shatters.

Structuring a Training Arc

A character's journey from novice to master can be structured around their attempt to achieve these seven conditions.

  • The early stages of a training montage are about the mentor establishing conditions 1 and 4: telling the hero what to do and where to go.
  • The middle is about building conditions 2 and 6: developing the skills until the hero perceives their own competence.
  • The climax of the training is a final test that fulfills condition 5: a high challenge that finally allows the hero to enter a true flow state for the first time.
