Narrative structure is the framework that guides the telling of a story. There are many models, from The Hero's Journey to Save The Cat. If we stack all of these models on top of each other, what are the parts that shine through? What is the universal model for story?
Rather than following the character or the plot action, what is most resonant is thematic argument, resonance, and resolution.
- Thematic Argument: The main idea or message the story is trying to convey through the characters and their struggles.
- Thematic Resonance: The emotional impact the story has on the audience, connecting them on a deeper level.
- Thematic Resolution: The way the story ends, where the thematic argument is fully realized and the characters have learned and grown.
In this model, characters are thrust into a narrative and thematic storm. As they push their way through, the eye of the storm provides false security. It is only by passing through the other side of the storm that they truly prove they have reckoned with their falsehoods and become reborn into the Theme.
