The Commitment Layer

Your character has values, wounds, personality, strengths, and an arc. The role is what they've chosen to do with all of it. A strength is a capability. A value is a belief. A role is a commitment, the answer to: "Given everything I am, what have I chosen to be?" The same Leadership strength can serve a Guardian (leading in defense), a Builder (leading construction), or a Healer (leading recovery). The strength is the tool. The role is the promise.

What This Resource Is

1 A 4×3 Matrix of Narrative Roles

12 roles emerge from the intersection of 4 Domains (People, Truth, Order, Movement) and 3 Modes (Engage, Hold, Transform). Every cell in the matrix is occupied. Every role is distinct.

2 The Shadow System

Every role has a shadow: the specific cost of overcommitment. A Guardian becomes possessive. A Seeker becomes obsessive. A Builder becomes an empire. Shadow patterns follow the Mode, not the Domain, making them structurally predictable.

3 From Capability to Commitment

Strengths tell you what a character can do. Roles tell you what they've chosen to do. A Guardian can guard through Courage, Empathy, or Strategic Thinking. The capability varies. The commitment stays. The gap between what someone is good at and what they've dedicated themselves to is where character lives.
