Defining the Nebulous

Personality is inherently nebulous and personal. Objectively defining something as fluid as personality is technically impossible. However, categorizing and systematizing tendencies into co-occurring groups helps when determining how to speak on behalf of a character.

These twelve trait spectrums, synthesized from the HEXACO and NERIS personality models, are grouped into four Affects. By understanding these Affects, you can build a striking, consistent, and psychologically resonant picture of who your character is at their core.

The Four Affects

Compass

Menace vs. Saint

A character's Compass is their default interpersonal conduct: how they habitually treat the people around them. A high Menace score suggests a character who deceives readily, talks down to others, and meets resistance with force (knavish, haughty, harsh). A high Saint score suggests one who defaults to transparency, downplays their own importance, and handles others with patience and care (honest, modest, gentle).

Focus

Cavalier vs. Tactician

A character's Focus is how much deliberation they invest in their actions. A high Cavalier score suggests a character who wings it, acting on impulse, ignoring details, and shrugging off consequences (apathetic, sloppy, impulsive). A high Tactician score suggests one who studies the situation, plans carefully, and weighs every option before committing (inquisitive, meticulous, prudent).
